Logging of lithological profiles in the field:
Lithostratigraphy is the basis of stratigraphic research. It deals with the understanding and correlating different bodies – or formations – of (sedimentary) rocks. By understanding how sediment is deposited today, we can reconstruct past conditions that led to the formation of investigated rock strata and the lateral extend.
