Earth scientists study the evolution and interactions of the solid Earth, atmosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere and anthropsphere since the formation of our planet over 4.56 billion years ago. By studying the evolution of the planet we live on, Earth Sciences help solving important and timely socio-economic and socio-ecological questions und demands, especially in the context of anthropogenic land-use change, global warming, and biodiversity loss.
Examples of Earth Science-related questions that need answers are for instance:
- Will our water resources suffice in response to global warming or will certain regions be experiencing increased drought?
- Where can we find the necessary resources for the energy transition?
- How are modifications of nutrient cycling in the oceans going to affect marine biodiversity and food sources?
- Which regions will be at increased risk of landslides?
As such the Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Graz, a member of the NAWI Graz Geocenter, contributes to five of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals: 6: Clean water and sanitation, 7: Affordable and clean energy, 13: Climate action, 14: Life below water, 15: Life on land.
Our research focuses on three topics: Biodiversity and Evolution, Climate and Environment, and Solid Earth Dynamics.
