Study Geosciences in Graz
The formation and structure of our planet and the development of life on it are the subject of geosciences. Our interest is spread over billions of years and on all scales from atoms to global scales. We deal with socially and environmentally relevant topics (such as securing raw materials and resources, climate change, waste, etc.).
The integration of basic research, applied research and engineering sciences within the NAWI Graz Geocenter is also transparent in the Geosciences degree program and represents a unique selling point in the German-speaking world.
The teaching of theoretical knowledge is closely linked to the implementation of applied methods (e.g. physical-chemical analysis methods, profiling, mapping, applied statistics, etc.) in the laboratory and in the field.
Graz is an ideal location for studying geosciences. Its geographical location on the edge of the Alps offers a wide range of geological attractions in the immediate vicinity.
Many nationally and internationally active geoscientific consulting offices based in Graz (e.g. geotechnics, engineering, hydrogeology and environmental geology) offer internships parallel to your studies and open up excellent opportunities for a direct career start.
Our degree program is not a mass study program; students are very well supervised and are also involved in ongoing research projects.
Bachelor's degree in Geosciences
The geosciences analyze the structure and composition of our planet from a scientific point of view. From this, important conclusions can be drawn for the utilization of resources, for the risk assessment of natural hazards, for safe settlement and for the diverse (and often problematic) effects of human activity on ecosystems. The Bachelor's degree program in Geosciences takes a multidisciplinary approach to teaching the fundamentals of the construction and development of planet Earth and life on our planet in the field and in the laboratory, as well as the application of geoscientific knowledge in economic and ecological areas, and is therefore well suited to students with a passion for science and an enthusiasm for technology.

What can I expect from the Bachelor's degree in Geosciences?
Master's program Geosciences
The Master's degree program in Geosciences builds on the Bachelor's degree program in Geosciences offered by NAWI Graz. It is offered as a foreign-language program in English.
Graduates of this NAWI Graz Bachelor's degree program meet the admission requirements for the Master's degree program in Geosciences and can be admitted to the Master's degree program in Geosciences without any further requirements.
The Master's program enables students to specialize in the fields of geology, paleontology and stratigraphy, petrology and geochemistry, hydrogeology, applied mineralogy and hydrogeochemistry, as well as engineering geology.

Doctoral studies and doctoral school
The Doctoral School of Earth Sciences organizes doctoral studies in the natural sciences in the Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Graz. There is close cooperation with Graz University of Technology (NAWI Graz) within the framework of the NAWI Graz Geo Centre, but the doctoral schools are currently still organized independently of each other.
