In Raman spectroscopy, a light source (laser) generates movements in the molecular lattice of a material to be examined (sample), i.e. the sample is set into oscillation. These interactions provide information about the properties of the sample. As every material has a different molecular structure, this method can be used to clearly characterize the sample to be examined.
The Raman microspectrometer is equipped with 3 laser units: red (633 nm), green (532 nm) and blue (473 nm) with 18 mW, 25 mW and 40 mW power respectively. The intended use ranges from mineral structure determination to inclusion investigations and their identification in metamorphic and non-metamorphic host minerals. Special methods are also available:
- Phase determination in the temperature range from -190 to 1500 °C with the aid of cooling and heating tables from LINKAM
- 2D/3D maps of selected areas of the test material
The main applications are therefore the identification of (melt) inclusion phases, PT-dependent peak-shift measurements on minerals (e.g. quartz, graphite) and on carrier materials such as Si wafers (see examples):
