Geochemical laboratory
To analyze the contents of carbon, organic carbon, carbonate and sulphur in bulk sediment samples, the institute houses a geochemical laboratory equipped with a LECO CS-230 device at the Institute for Earth Sciences (Heinrichstraße 26).
The geochemical proxy data are mainly used for paleoceanographic and paleolimnologic research as indicators of surface-water productivity, bottom-water oxygenation and riverine input.
Some current projects involving the LECO device:
- Taxonomy and palecology of deep-sea foraminifers from the South Atlantic
- Millennial- to centennial-scale vegetation dynamics and surface water productivity during the Late Miocene in and around Lake Pannon
- Paleoceanography of the Central Paratethys during the Burdigalian and Langhian
- Integrated facies-analysis in the Oligocene and Early Miocene of the North Alpine Foreland Basin
- Paleonvironmental changes at the Cretaceous/Paleogene boundary in the Eastern Alps
- Devonian reefs in Austria
