Assistance for prospective new PhD students

If you are interested in PhD studies in Earth Sciences at the University of Graz, then we are very happy to welcome you to the DOCTORATE SCHOOL OF EARTH SCIENCES once you are a student of the University.  However, first, your enrolment needs to be through the  section “Academic affairs” of the University and not through the Doctorate school. Here we just give you some hints how to approach becoming a student of our university and which hurdles you might encounter.

Your first step needs to be to find a PhD project (funded or not) together with your prospective supervisor.  Following that, it will be necessary to enroll at the University of Graz as a PhD student. For this it will be necessary to  get your MSc degree from your home university accredited to be equivalent of the MSc degree in Austria. It may also be necessary to provide proof of English knowledge. If your project involves employment at Graz University, then then some aspects of these steps may be easier and some aspects may be harder. Because of the different requirements that may exist for students from different countries and different backgrounds, there are two places at the University of Graz that are here  to assist you.

If you plan to be a PhD student and can not find a funded project or supervisor, then there are always several possibilities to apply for your own funding. In particular, the Austrian Academic Exchange Service OeAD (https://oead.at/) or the Austrian Academy of Sciences (https://www.oeaw.ac.at/) are two of many institutions that provide personalized PhD scholarships or can advise you where to find other funding schemes.

Good luck with your efforts!
